January is a month for cleansing, rejuvenating, and reflecting on what we want to change in the new year. Many of us love this time of year because we are feeling good and thrilled about the possibilities it may bring. However, some of us may have difficulty accepting change and may even suffer from January Blues!Whilst it can be a terrific time for goal-setting, it’s often the case that we create heaps of unrealistic New Year’s Resolutions that are hard to reach and strive for perfection, and then we beat ourselves up when we don’t achieve them.
Whatever the New Year has for you, keep in mind that, rather than attempting to be the perfect person, your health is the most essential consideration at this time of year! Make goals for your own health and happiness - and make time to work out what you really want to achieve – pursue what your heart loves – what you could do - rather than what your rational mind believes you should do.Essential oils can help you take a more delicate approach to New Year wellness, so keep reading for aromatherapy recommendations to help you be a little nicer to yourself during this typically demanding time of year!
Essential oils for a happy and healthy heart in the New Year!
Cleansing Ritual for the New Year
We can start the New Year by purifying our entire selves, utilizing essential oils to cleanse and revitalize our energies in preparation for the year ahead, as well as to help us let go of the past. If you had an emotional year last year, you may be relieved to see it end – but that doesn't guarantee the current year will be the same. Before you commit to new goals, welcome it in by devoting some time to cleansing and refreshing yourself by following this wellness ritual!
- Prepare a safe and quiet space for you to relax and get comfortable – perhaps lying down.
- Light a candle, pop a diffuser (or candle burner) on with 5 drops Lemon essential oil, 3 drops Lime and 3 drops Cypress, and have a Sage smudging stick at the ready.
- Take a few moments to breathe deeply, inhaling the new, and exhaling the old.
- Place your left hand on your heart chakra, and your right on your solar plexus – just below your breastbone. Affirm in your head that you welcome in the positivity of the New Year. Breathe here.
- Set an intention to cleanse your mind, body and soul ready for the New Year.
- Visualise closing the door on last year and imagine the New Year as a success.
- When you are ready, burn your Sage smudge stick and move it round your aura as you say, “I cleanse myself ready for a positive New Year.”
- Enjoy the feeling of peace and new beginnings. Embody it, to remember throughout the New Year!
Increase your Focus and Determination
Before you set these goals, create a spritz that you can use to associate with them, to remind you to keep on track. For this, you might use your favourite, heart-happy, essential oils, or you could try our ‘Resolve’ blend – add 100ml of water into a SPRAY BOTTLE and add 15 drops Lemon, 5 drops Myrrh and 10 drops Rosemary.
Write out your achievable New Year’s Resolutions, along with a reason for why you want to achieve it.
After each goal, spritz yourself with your essential oil blend and repeat your goal and reasoning aloud, as if it were a mantra.
For the next two weeks, repeat this mantra-spritz every morning.
Carry your spritz with you and use it as needed to remind you to stay focused whenever you're tempted to give up - and to keep you focused on your goal!
Inspire Positivity with an Affirmation Bath
Not everyone likes New Year – or January. Do you feel a bit low at this time of year – does it fill you with dread? Affirmations are wonderful to help you stay inspired and positive about the change and your ability to cope with it. You might not know what it is that makes you dislike New Year, but that’s ok! To help you feel more positive and confident, follow this routine:
Run a nice warm bath (or do whatever makes you feel relaxed – if this is just lying down, then do that!)
Make this nurturing blend:
Set the scene with essential oils:1 cup Epsom salt, 1/4 cup coconut Oil, 5 drops lavender, 6 drops geranium – this is a really nurturing blend. You may try our SIGNATURE SLEEP BATH TEA.
To make a the affirmation bath:
Use of the blend above for a standard-size bathtub filled with warm water.
Pour the blend into running water to help it dissolve faster into the bath.
Soak in the tub for at least 12 minutes, or 20 minutes to treat constipation.
Lie there and Think about what it is about this time of year that makes you hate it. Breathe in and out of your ideas. Take note of any unpleasant thoughts that come to mind.
Create some positive affirmations (see examples below) and repeat them over and over, out loud or in your head! If there is a consistent theme as to why you hate New Year, create an affirmation to repeat based on that.
Select an affirmation that resonates with you, in your heart, and repeat this every day until you start to feel more positive about the year ahead.
Here are some positive affirmation suggestions:
I welcome in the positivity of a fresh exciting New Year
I deal with New Year well, the New Year is kinder to me

All is well in the world this New Year

Detox for Health
Detoxing as part of improving health – without going too far – can assist with energy, skin and organ health, digestion, and overall body cleansing, so it's a good objective as long as it's for health reasons rather than just for looks – and as long as you want to do it!
There are some great essential oils to support a detox:
Massage – add 2 drops Grapefruit, 2 drops Sandalwood and 2 drops Peppermint into 12ml Organic Coconut oil and apply to your entire body (particular digestive areas) in the direction of your heart. These aromatherapy oils are extremely detoxifying for the body, as well as energizing! If you have any medical issues, you may consult Amy please before using. @simplywellness.co.nz
Inhaler – to stop those incessant cravings for unhealthy food during your detox, pop 4 drops of Grapefruit essential oil onto a cotton pad and roll it up into an inhaler stick to keep with you during the day!
Doing all of the above will naturally help you start to enable change in your life, but if you start to feel you’re struggling, pop some supportive essential oils in the diffuser or candle-burner! Try 3 drops Geranium, 3 drops Jasmine and 3 drops Ylang Ylang for balancing emotions and enabling positive change!
Most Importantly, Be Kind to Yourself
Whatever you decide to do this New Year, remember to be kind to yourself! Don’t fall into the pattern of making resolutions about image or achievement: create health and happiness focused goals which fulfill your heart and lead you closer to your truth. Make some time for your wellbeing and use essential oils to ease yourself gently and positively into a Happy New Year!
