The Positive Impact of Hydration

You might not have thought about the effect that H2O can have on your mood. It turns out that as little as a 1.5 percent loss of fluid can result in fatigue, anxiety, mood changes, headaches, lack of motivation, and difficulty concentrating. It may be interesting to note that by the time the body feels thirsty, it may have already lost up to two percent of bodily fluids, meaning that thirst may not always be the best indication of when and how much to drink.

Detoxifier

The body uses water to transport waste. The liver and kidneys especially need it to flush away all the toxins. When it becomes dehydrated, the body pulls liquid away from the colon and intestines, which can make digestion and bowel movements (another detoxifying activity) problematic.

Prevents Headache

Because water makes up so much of the brain and body, it is less of wonder that being dehydrated can lead to tension headaches. Staying hydrated can help to prevent tension headaches and can even lessen the frequency of migraines.

Helps In Weight Loss

Drinking (OR EATING - i'll go into that later) your H2O can be one of the easiest ways to control your weight. It might help in three ways: 1. Filling up on fluids suppresses appetite. 2. Having plenty of liquids boosts metabolism. 3. Not drinking enough may cause the body to hold on to every last drop of water for survival. The result can be bloating and a puffy appearance. By staying hydrated, your body can maintain a healthy balance of fluids.

Eating for HydrationYou've probably heard that we were duped by the age-old prescription saying we need eight glasses of H2O per day. The science behind the fabled rule was, well, watered down; it failed to take into account important variables. For instance, do you live in a dry climate? How much water do you lose during that hot yoga sweat sesh? And do you habitually nosh on foods throughout the day that are super-packed with water?
What we do know is that it's important to stay hydrated for overall health. Water can help with weight control because it keeps you feeling full, it flushes toxins out of our bodies, and our kidneys need water to function. Some studies hint that staying hydrated translates to better concentration, too. About one-fifth of our water consumption comes from foods (namely fruits and veggies), according to the Institute of Medicine. Here are some hydrating foods that clock in with a high water content and will work in tandem with your water bottle to help you stay hydrated.

Fruit Beautiful Fruit

Here are some of my fave... try them blended together in a smoothie or cut up a heap for a 'mono-meal' (a meal of one fruit gives your digestive system a much needed rest and really improves hydration). 

Kiwifruit

Pineapple is usually known for its high levels of vitamin C, vitamin B, magnesium, potassium, and manganese, but clearly its benefits don't stop there. It also contains bromelain, an enzyme with anti-inflammatory properties. Also, with a water content of 86 percent, no wonder this delicious fruit packs hydration. Blending the pineapple for a quick smoothie with ice is highly recommended, but eating it straight from the cutting board is a good tactic to use its hydration powers, too.

Watermelon

Watermelon is about 92 percent water, plus, it's filled with nutrients like vitamins A, B6, and C, as well as lycopene and antioxidants. Use watermelon to flavour your water, or even puree it to make a healthy smoothie or freeze into an iceblock.

Peaches

Grapefruit are low in calories but high in nutrients, and not to mention, consist of more than 90 percent water. They are rich in vitamins A and C, and a source of powerful antioxidants that may help boost your immune system. What's not to like? Eat it for breakfast, and you'll set yourself up for a fiber-filled day where you're able to control your appetite better. The freshly squeezed juice, on the other hand, makes a great juice that will provide a delicious treat and many health benefits.

Rockmelon

You can count on rockmelon to hold up well in fruit salads. But some other delish options? Add it to a kebab with grapes or, try incorporating the tropical fruit in a salsa - mind, blown!Peaches

Kiwifruit

Kiwis actually have more vitamin C than an oranges. Kiwifruit is made up of 85 percent water and has as much potassium as a medium banana. It also has a low glycemic index, which means fewer spikes in blood sugars for a more sustained release of energy, which will satiate your sweet tooth and is the perfect addition to a fruit salad.

Peaches

With 88 percent water content, they're delicious and they're also fun to stealoff your neighbours trees!

Let's not forget vegetables.

Soup

Soup is a great way to get lots of vegetables into your diet and super hydrating as its made mostly of water. We're all familiar with soup's healing benefits, demonstrated by the fact that it's commonly considered good 'sick' food. Adding soup to your daily meal lineup may promote weight loss. Think of soup as a blank canvas to load up with more nutrition by adding veggies.

Broccoli

From a nutritional standpoint, this flowering head of cruciferous goodness might qualify as top dog among the vegetable kingdom, It's a nutritional powerhouse and provides disease protective phytonutrients, antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, minerals and tastes great. Plus, it's 91 percent water. Try chopping it up for salads, adding it to creamy soups, or sauté it in some olive oil and garlic - top with crushed up almonds.Eggplant With a water content of about 89 percent, eggplants are a hydrating vegetable you'll want to be sure to include in your diet, since they're low in calories and a good source of dietary fiber, too. Eggplants are also a source of copper, B vitamins, manganese, vitamin K, and potassium, nutrients that support a healthy metabolic, immune, and cardiovascular system. Add eggplant to curries, stir-fries, sandwiches or pasta dishes. You can also use it as a meat alternative (think: eggplant burgers). Another option? Swap lasagna noodles with thin slices of eggplant for a lower-calorie, reduced-carb lasagna.

Cucumber

The secret to being cool as a cucumber? Cucumbers contain about 95 percent water. Plus, they're packed with potassium, which may help prevent stroke. On top of that, they contain an anti-inflammatory substance, fisetin, which promotes brain health. Snack on cucumbers, throw them in a salad, or simply pair them with tomatoes, oil and balsamic vinegar for a healthy snack.

Celery

Lean, green, and a cancer-fighting machine is 95 percent water. A University of Illinois study found that luteolin, a flavonoid in celery, has the potential to inhibit cancer cell growth, especially in the pancreas.

Zucchini

We noodle lovers unite to salute zucchini because spiralised zoodles have the potential to, ahem, squash our pasta cravings since they make for a mighty substitution in traditionally carb-heavy dishes. With a water content of 95 percent, zucchini is high-ranking on the highly hydrating foods list, too.

Radishes

95 percent water - snack on radishes like carrots. Radishes are known for their cooling effect. The natural heat or spicy flavour of a radish acts on the body to help alleviate excess heat in the body, they're also a great source of vitamin c, phosphorus and zinc, keys minerals, and antioxidants that protect cells and nourish tissues.

Carrots

Carrots are 90 percent water and are high in fiber. On top of that, they're good for your eyes. Carrots are really important for good vision as they help your eyes glisten by supporting the moisture and mucous membranes that help distinguish between night and day. Sneak more into your diet by chopping them up and add them to a salad, or snacking on them with some hummus or guacamole. Grating into pasta sauce is a great way to get more in the kid's diet.

What dehydrates you?

Salty Snacks

It’s no secret that salt causes dehydration due to the impact that sodium has on the body. Your kidneys will acknowledge this flood of salt and seek to rectify it by pulling water from elsewhere within your body, which of course leaves other organs and cells short on fluid. As a result of this, any food that is high in salt can be highly dehydrating, with packaged snacks such as pretzels and popcorn the prime offenders.

Protein 

High concentrations of protein can be hugely dehydrating at the best of times, whether they take the form of red or white meat. Perhaps the biggest offender, however, is cured meats. Once we factor in that these products tend to be heavily seasoned with salt you have all the makings of a thirst-inducing meal. Drink plenty of water with your meat, and consider some water-centric fresh fruits and vegetables as a side.

Soy Sauce 

AKA Liquid Salt - Use soy sauce in moderation and you’ll be fine, but it’s still worth considering a glass of water alongside your meal to redress the balance.

Sugary Treats

The kidneys will attempt to overcompensate for the fact that sugar does not belong in the blood and will pull fluid from elsewhere, with the effect being , you guessed it - dehydration. Soft drinks are the prime offenders here due to the sheer concentration of sugar, but of course chocolate and sweets will also be laden with sugar.

Packaged Food

Ready meals tend to be packed with sugar and salt for flavour, and are thus to be approached with caution. The same also applies to fried foods, including anything that you may pick up in a fast food restaurant.
